Asynchronous Processing and Caching in MuleSoft: A Technical Deep Dive
In this blog, we will explore two essential scopes in MuleSoft — Cache Scope and Async Scope — that play a critical role in building efficient and scalable integrations. These scopes help control flow behavior, improve performance, and manage resources more effectively in various use cases.
We will begin with the Cache Scope, which stores frequently accessed data to avoid redundant API or database calls—enhancing speed and reducing latency. Next, we’ll dive into the Async Scope, which enables non-blocking background processing for logic that doesn’t require an immediate response.
Cache Scope
The Cache Scopein MuleSoft is a powerful tool designed to improve performance by temporarily storing frequently accessed data. Whether it's API responses, database queries, or computational results, caching can significantly reduce processing time and system load.
Why Use Cache Scope in MuleSoft?
1. Save Time and Improve Performance
Cache Scope reduces repeated processing by storing frequently accessed data. This results in faster responses, which is critical for performance-driven applications.
2. Enhance User Experience
Faster integrations lead to smoother and more responsive applications. By avoiding unnecessary waits, users experience quicker load times and improved satisfaction.
3. Avoid Hitting Rate Limits
Many APIs (like Salesforce, AWS, etc.) enforce strict rate limits. Caching ensures you don’t make redundant calls, helping you stay well within usage quotas and avoid service disruptions.
4. Reduce Backend and Database Load
By serving data from cache instead of querying the database each time, you reduce pressure on backend systems—leading to more stable and scalable integrations.
5. Improve Overall System Efficiency
When you combine faster responses, reduced API usage, and lower backend load, your entire system runs more efficiently—enhancing performance and reliability across the board.
How It Works
By default, Cache Scope uses a static expression, which means it always returns the same cached response—even if the request changes. However, when we configure a key expression, MuleSoft is able to cache dynamic requests based on unique input values (like query parameters, payload, etc.).
Additionally, we can apply a filter condition to control caching logic. For instance: attributes.queryParams.customerName != "Taha"
This ensures that requests for "Taha" always fetch fresh data from the database, bypassing the cache, while all other values are cached. This flexibility allows us to optimize performance while maintaining control over dynamic and exception-based scenarios.
As seen in the screenshot below, we can clearly understand how Postman responses time (highlighted in yellow) differ when using Cache Scope with and without caching.
Async Scope
The Async Scope in MuleSoft is a powerful feature used to process tasks in the background without blocking the main flow. It’s ideal for operations that don’t need to finish before sending a response to the user—helping improve responsiveness and system throughput.
Why Use Async Scope in MuleSoft?
1. Enable Non-Blocking Processing
Async Scope allows background tasks to run independently of the main flow. This means you can send a response immediately while secondary tasks like logging, audit trails, or notifications continue running in the background.
2. Improve Performance and User Experience
By not waiting for every task to complete, your application becomes more responsive and faster—delivering a better experience for end-users.
3. Handle Resource-Intensive Tasks Separately
If you have tasks that require more time or memory (like file writing or data transformations), you can offload them into an Async Scope so that the main flow isn’t slowed down.
4. Optimize System Throughput
By parallelizing background operations, Async Scope boosts overall system throughput—handling more tasks in less time without sacrificing responsiveness.
maxConcurrency in Async Scope
The Async Scope in MuleSoft allows you to run background tasks without blocking the main flow. It’s very useful when you want to perform operations like logging, notifications, or saving audit data after sending the response to the client. But here’s the catch — if too many async tasks run at the same time, your system might slow down, run out of memory, or even crash under pressure. That’s why MuleSoft provides a feature called maxConcurrency.
What is maxConcurrency?
maxConcurrency is a setting that controls how many tasks inside the Async Scope can run at once.
Let’s say your flow is receiving 100 records. For each record, you want to run background tasks like:
- Logging the request
- Sending a confirmation email
- Writing audit information to a file
If you don’t use maxConcurrency, MuleSoft may try to process all 100 records in parallel, which can:
- Use too much memory
- Overload CPU
- Slow down the server
By setting maxConcurrency to 10, only ten records will be processed at the same time in the Async Scope. The rest will wait their turn — helping your system stay fast and stable.
